Abstract

Regulatory and non-regulatory approaches to the management of contaminated sites in North America, Europe, Australia and New Zealand are overviewed. Clean-up criteria have historically been based upon generic, numeric guidelines for the investigation and remediation of contaminated sites. Current trends are toward site-specific, probabilistic exposure/risk assessments, decision analysis and non-regulatory controls.
