Abstract

Ground modification processes aim to contain wastes and contamination, or improve the engineering properties of waste so as to facilitate rehabilitation and constructive use. The techniques available are mechanical compaction, drainage, dewatering, consolidation, stabilisation with admixtures, and the construction of impermeable barriers with clay and synthetic liners, slurry walls, grouting and deep mixing. The use of industrial by-products and recycled construction materials for building roads and other engineering projects also falls within the framework of ground modification.
