Design and management of landfills
Abstract
This paper provides an overview of geotechnical and hydrogeological elements that need to be considered in the design and management of landfills. The paper is largely based on the authors’ experience in Australia but draws on experience from overseas through published information. The paper discusses a generalised approach to design of landfills, regulatory requirements, evaluation of landfill sites, leachate volumes and quality, lining systems, leachate collection and disposal, landfill gas and landfill closure.
