Thermal conductivity of granular media
Abstract
Conduction through interparticle contact and radiation in pores are the two main phenomena accounting for thermal conductivity of granular materials. For each phenomenon a model is proposed to estimate the corresponding effective macroscopic conductivity of a partially densified random packing of spheres. The first model assumes that tne packing is equivalent to a three-dimensional network composed of thermal resistances connecting the centres of touching spheres. The second model simulates the tracing of randomly-defined rays within the packing.
