Co-operative motion of grains in a discrete model
Abstract
A simple discrete mathematical model of a granular material is presented which treats the grains as rigid bodies and in which interaction between grains comprises the condition of impenetrability and frictional resistance to motion. The purpose of the model is to consider initial value problems which are analogous to some boundary value problems of continuum quasi-static rigid-plastic theory and which correspond to simple experiments. Some computational aspects of the model are considered.
