Abstract

In order to determine which internal parameters are relevant when describing a nonhomogeneous assembly of densely packed discs in elasto-frictional interaction, an analytical method is demonstrated in which the particle displacements are found from the equilibrium equations in functional form. A sample problem is treated and the outcome of the method is compared with a photoelastic test. Three key internal variables are identified: the contact distribution, the force ratio distribution and the quadratic variation in the force ratio distribution.
