Abstract

This paper describes the results of the three dimensional analysis for cyclic shear deformation of a granular material using the distinct element method. The analysis was performed for the cyclic shear test specimen which is filled with about five hundred spheres. The cyclic shear deformation of the specimen is induced by the displacement of the boundaries. In the series of analysis simple cubic packing and simple stagger are adopted as the typical arrangement of the granular material. As the results of the analyses, following were made clear. (l)The shear deformation in the specimen is not neccesarily uniform according to the particle arrangement even if the boundary moves like a simple shear test. (2)The hysteresis curve for cyclic shear is affected by the particle arrangement of the specimen. (3)Volume of the simple stagger specimen during the cyclic shear increases. Dilatancy is negative for the simple cubic packing specimen.
