Abstract

The paper presents results of numerical simulations of assemblies of elliptical particles in a combination of biaxial and simple shear tests to investigate micromechanical effects associated with principal stress rotation. Its is shown that the principal stress rotation leads to contractive behavior of the simulated system and during stress rotation the direction of anisotropy follows closely the direction of major principal stress. Micromechanical theory of this phenomenon is offered.
