Discrete element modeling of vibrating granular beds
Abstract
Discrete element modeling is done to study the behavior of systems of uniform, smooth and inelastic spheres subjected to vibrations imposed by a plane boundary which oscillates sinusoidally about a zero mean speed. In this paper, we discuss the effects of boundary velocity, frequency T, and bulk granular mass on depth profiles of solids fraction and fluctuation kinetic energy per unit mass. Comparisons of computed quantities with recent kinetic theory predictions show very good agreement for 10 < f < 99.6 Hz. Expansion of the bed occurs for 10 < f < 200 Hz., while an increase in density relative to the pre-vibrated state occurs for f > 200 Hz.
