Abstract

A stability analysis is performed for a granular shear flow with a linear velocity profile a constant density, and a constant fluctuation energy (i.e. ‘temperature’). The interaction of various modes with the mean flow leads to amplification of disturbances. Viscosity limits amplification to small wavevectors. Wavevectors are stretched and turned by the mean flow, thus insuring linear stability. For granular fluids the growth rate of the perturbations may become large enough for nonlinear effects to become important. The present analysis indicates that this transient amplification of perturbations can lead to structure formation.
