Computer simulation of simple shear flow of inelastic, frictional spheres
Abstract
By following the approach of molecular dynamics, we simulate a system of granular material composed of inelastic, frictional (and smooth) spheres in rapid simple shear. Transport properties such as mean velocity, granular temperatures and stresses are obtained by means of statistical averages at steady state. The results show that the granular temperatures and stresses are anisotropic. At high concentrations, there exists an onset of stress jumps at some critical solids fraction near 0.52 or so. With further increase in concentration, depending on the shear gap height and initial granular temperature, bifurcation of stresses can occur.
