Avalanches in real sandpiles: The role of disorder
Abstract
We introduce a cellular automaton model of a sandpile that contains unquenched structural disorder. We examine the statistics of the avalanches and show that they do not have the scaling behaviour which is associated with self-organized criticality. Our results, and those from earlier lattice grain sandpiles, are discussed in the context of real granular dynamics.
