Grain shape and size influence on low stress behaviour observing discrete avalanches in a rotating cylinder
Abstract
Different sands were compared with identical standard test conditions where low stress levels are typically present. It is the case when throwing off the balance of a granular packing, starting avalanches in the formation process of a “natural slope”. The roll-test has been performed with a lot of dry sand samples, of different natures and grain shapes, which were sieved to obtain comparable granulometry (various mean size but similar coefficient of uniformity). The results are presented and interpreted here, taking the failure process into account.
