Abstract

We demonstrate using centrifuge experiment (10-1000m/s 2 ) on sandpile avalanches: i) grain cohesion is négligeable, ii) the avalanche size and the maximum angle of repose depend on the initial pile-density, iii) an internal friction angle may be defined and corresponds to that one measured with triaxial cell as assumed in soil mechanics. These data are coherent with a dilatancy effect which depends on density.
