Abstract

Dynamic process of the formation of arches plugging the granular flow was investigated by physical experiments and numerical simulations using DEM. Basic flow patterns and the stability of temporary arches, which appeared occasionally, were explained by the analysis of velocity vectors for very short time increment. Density wave and switching mode were found to be strongly related to arch formation.
