Abstract

Horizontal pressure distribution in silo models is investigated using an original experimental technique. The technique consists in measuring the force required to pull out a rod immersed in the granular mass. Using the rod on solids friction coefficient, the technique allows the determination of the horizontal pressure acting within the bed of particles. The horizontal pressure is found uniform over a cross section of the bed. An equation is proposed which fairly correlates the increase with depth of horizontal pressure.
