Abstract

A new model has been developed to deal with capture and rebound of small particles from surfaces upon elastic-plastic impact. For the case of no surface adhesion the plastic force-displacement relationship is based on the classical Hertzian theory while the JKR ( Johnson et al, 1971 ) adhesion model is extended to investigate impact behaviour which involves plastic deformation. Computer simulations have been performed to determine the coefficient of restitution over a wide range of particle impact speeds. The simulated results are compared with experimental data.
