A numerical model for the mechanical behavior of particulate media containing non-circular shaped particles
Abstract
This work describes a discrete element model that employs a new contact algorithm for the mechanical analysis of a system of general shaped two-dimensional interacting particles (or bodies). The boundary geometry of the particles (or bodies) is defined with an analytical superquadric representation. This model is currently under development to provide further insight into the effect of particle shape on the micromechanical behavior of particulate systems. Numerical examples validate the numerical model on systems of general shaped (non-elliptical) interacting bodies.
