Abstract

Sluiceway across an embankment in Japan has been constructed on end bearing piles. When this method is adopted in a compressible soil, large differential settlements occur between the sluiceway and the ground, leading to a harmful cavity under the sluiceway. To avoid this problem, a flexible system of sluiceway with floating type foundation is investigated. This is a report of the proposed system, describing the performance of test embankments on prototype of flexible sluiceways with skin resistance piles and improved soil columns.
