Effect of embankment stiffness on deformations of soft clay foundation
Abstract
An approach considering the geometry and relatively high shear stiffness of the embankment, and the compressibility and shear stiffness of the soft soil, is presented to analyze the interaction between the two. The analysis, with and without shear stiffness of the soft soil, indicates that the embankment stiffness has more significant effect in the former case. A new parameter and a criterion for identifying and quantifying the relative embankment rigidity is proposed. A parametric study reports the influences of the various parameters considered. Application to a case study is illustrated.
