Transmission line anchor design and construction in volcanic clays
Abstract
Increasing development in areas of the tropics provide engineering challenges with respect to both design and construction. A transmission line project in Papua New Guinea provided both when conventional dead-man anchors were installed by local labour forces in low density, sensitive volcanic soils of the Tari Basin. Anchor pull out tests, undertaken to verify that design techniques used in temperate climate soils were applicable to the residual clays, are described along with some of the construction challenges which had to be addressed.
