Abstract

SYNOPSIS: The tin mining process in Malaysia has left behind ponds, loose sandy soils, and slime deposits in the pond or on land. The slime is a fine waste material generally comprising soft to very soft silty clay usually containing some fine sand. In order to render the disturbed land suitable for building purposes systems of treatment based on established geotechnical methods have been developed and are briefly described. The method of subsurface investigation appropriate to the deposits are discussed. The geotechnical characteristics of the slime have been identified for the purpose of the design of the treatment. The performance of fill and embankments on the treated slime has been monitored and the results obtained have been analysed.
