Abstract

There are many potential sites for undersea road tunnels in Scotland, along the irregular western coast and between the many offshore islands. Few of these sites appear viable because the small and scattered populations of these areas are unlikely to generate sufficient traffic flows. However, undersea road tunnels across the Sound of Harris and linking Orkney to the Scottish mainland appear to justify more detailed studies. The paper highlights the problems of promoting undersea road tunnels in Scotland and how these problems could be overcome.
