Future projects for highway construction across straits in Japan, and technical considerations
Abstract
Following the successful completion of the Honshu-Shikoku Bridge, future straits crossing projects, including long-span bridges and tunnels of a scale greater than previously seen in Japan, are now under consideration. This paper describes the plans for these future projects — structures between 20 and 30 percent larger than anything before. The paper concludes that the large structures under consideration can be designed and constructed using existing technology, but that new technology should be developed to save time and costs. The paper also discusses current technology and the development of new technology.
