Conceptual design of Osaka Bay crossings
Abstract
Osaka Bay occupies the central position of the Kansai Megalopolis forming almost a perfect ellipse with the total area of 1,500 km 2 . A conceptual design of bay-crossing access routes for Osaka Bay is proposed in relation to two man-made islands forming twin foci, Focus A and Focus B, of the elliptic bay. The former is an island of jacket type; while the latter being an island of semi-submerged floating type. The types of bay-crossing structures considered include bridges with submerged floating foundations, submerged floating tunnels, soft-landing tunnels and embedded tunnels.
