Abstract

A methodology for the evaluation of the annual probability of occurrence of permanent deformation in sloping seabed due to ground-motion shaking is presented. The seismic damage hazard analysis (SDHA) is carried out here by coupling conventional seismic hazard analysis (SHA) for the site and the slope response to real earthquakes of different intensities. The final slope displacement is computed using the Newmark’s method. The merging of these two approaches permits calculation of the seismic hazard the slope faces in direct displacement terms. The methodology is illustrated in this paper with the aid of a simple case study where the annual probability of exceeding a pre-defined slope deformation is computed. The numerical example refers to the slopes in the Messina Straits area.
