The open steel deck cable-stayed bridge
Abstract
The paper describes the progressive development of a ‘family’ of open structure steel deck cable-stayed bridges from the Rees Rhine bridge In 1967 to the Dartford bridge over the Thames in 1991. The bridges were designed to meet the loading requirements and design codes of a number of countries, but with emphasis always on ease of construction for the particular environment. The type has been demonstrated to give economical solutions for the longer cable-stayed spans with excellent aerodynamic performance, using a novel roadway system with maintenance advantages.
