Strait crossings in and around Denmark
Abstract
A fixed link across the Great Belt between the islands of Funen and Zealand is now under construction. Later in 1994 the construction work for the fixed link across the Sound between Denmark and Sweden is expected to commerce. Also in 1994 a technical and environmental feasibility study and a pararallel traffic study will start in a collaboration between Denmark and Germany concerning a fixed link across the Femer Belt. Comprehensive investigations have been and are made of the environmental consequences of the projects, including the effects on the marine environment on the Baltic Sea, Great Belt and the Sound. The Great Belt Link will break down on economic barriers which today divide the national economy in Denmark in two halves. The Sound Link will improve traffic communications between Denmark and Sweden and thereby produce the necessary conditions for more intensive and extensive cultural and economic cooperation between the two countries.
