Messina Strait Crossing: Geotechmcal and hydrogeological problems in the land-sea tunnel junction
Abstract
The railway link between Sicily and Calabria proposed by ENI allows the optimum integration of the existing transport network as well as resulting in a very low environmental impact. The designed solution requires the construction of 60 km-long tunnels on either end of the Messina strait, a land-sea junction at a depth of upto 40m below the sea, and construction of large underground chambers for railway stations and railway crossings. The design solutions to the geotechnical and hydrogeological problems and the control of subsidence are discussed.
