Norwegian subsea road tunnels: Experience from 10 years of construction, operation and maintenance
Abstract
Since the construction of the first norwegian subsea road tunnel at Vard0,13 subsea road tunnels with a total length of about 33 km have been completed. In addition several tunnels are under construction or on the drawing board. Costs, technical conditions and experience gained from operation and maintenance are discussed. Safety, driver behaviour and some psychological aspects are also dealt with. Among other conclusions, a substantial reduction in subsea construction costs has been registered over the last decade. Maintenance and operation costs vary widely. Only a very few accidents can be attributed to steep gradients in subsea tunnels.
