Abstract

A program to gain knowledge of these and other questions has been in progress for the Norwegian Public Roads Administration the last three years. A total of 5585 drivers has participated in eight self-completion postcard surveys for nine subsea tunnels and two long mountain tunnels. The participants have been actual users of the tunnels in operation and potential users of the tunnels in process of construction. The results imply that the majority of the Norwegian population will have no problems in driving through the tunnels. Sixty to eighty percent will consider it as a normal driving experience, five to twenty percent will consider it a positive driving experience and two to eight percent will consider it a negative driving experience. The drivers comprehension of safety is the same for ferry crossings and subsea tunnels. There is no clear preference tendency between bridges and tunnels.
