Abstract

Denmark is the «bridge» between Scandinavia and the western part of the European Continent, and most of the traffic and transport between Scandinavia traverses Denmark. As of now, road and rail traffic has to use at least one ferry link on its way. To avoid this, fixed links are either under way or under consideration, which eventually will provide continuous routes for traffic on wheels through Denmark. The paper summarises the status of the various fixed links in question and focuses on the expected changes in transport patterns both for short-distance and long-distance traffic, and it points out that more thorough studies are needed to reveal the full implications of the fixed links to come.
