Abstract

Lantau Fixed Crossing is to form the central part of the road and rail access from Hong Kong to Lantau Island, the largest offshore land area in the Territory, and is one of the core projects essential to the new port and airport developments. When completed the 3.5km long crossing will carry six lanes of highway traffic on an upper deck and two additional lanes in a sheltered lower deck together with twin tracks of high speed railway. It comprises the Tsing Ma Suspension Bridge, which will have the world’s longest combined road and rail span of 1377m, the Ma Wan Viaduct and the 430m span cable stayed Kap Shui Mun Bridge. This paper describes the background and development of the scheme. Details of the design are given together with an indication of the progress achieved.
