Elastoplastic capacity control of a submerged tubular steel bridge subjected to ship collision impact
Abstract
Structural response and energy absorption capacity is studied for accidental ship collision impact on a submerged tubular steel bridge. The tubular cross section may be stiffened in ring and longitudinal directions. Response predictions are established from comprehensive explicit dynamic finite element models and from approximate simple numerical calculations. It is demonstrated that by choosing reasonable deformation patterns in the impact area, the approximate methods will yield good results to be used for instance for pre-design and during an optimization process of the structure.
