Submerged structures supported on sand pumped underneath structure
Abstract
Methods of placement of sand foundations by pumping sand-water mixtures into confined spaces to provide full bottom support for submerged structures are described, based on 50 years experience. The sand classification properties are outlined, and the in-situ densities and compressibilities of the sand beds are reported from model tests and full scale observations. Comments on both static and dynamic performance of these hydraulically placed sand beds are given. Comparisons are finally made with other support methods such as screeded stone beds or grouting.
