Abstract

The exploratory tunnel Piora Synform (SSP) has been excavated in northern direction from December 1993 until March 1996 and started near Polmengo/TI. Despite of blowout-preventers and the knowledge, that the Piora Synform - consisting of partly water saturated rock - will be encountered on SSP-level, a blow out of a sandy dolomite-water-suspension happened on the 31st of March 1996, entering the SSP through a drillhole at the end of the tunnel (tm 5552). After the blow-out an exploratory drilling campaign determined first geometry, build-up and extension of the synform at SSP-level and later at the level of the GotthardBasetunnel. Fortunately it turned out, that the porous, therefore watersaturated and partly sugar-grained dolomitic rockmaterial of the synform consisted below 700 m above sea-level only of a compact, dense anhydrite-dolomite-sequence. This positive result has been verified in at last 4 drillholes named Bs 4.2, Bs 4.3, Bs 4.5 and Bs 5.1 and led to the abandonment of intensive investigation- and drainage programs as well as a projected shaft. This paper describes in short form the main results of this - by far - most expensive and comprehensive investigation-campaign for the project Gotthard-Basetunnel
