Abstract

The Lötschberg-Simplon line will be the first railway through the Alps with very large cross-sections, providing a comprehensive goods transit facility. With the existing Simplon base tunnel 19,8 km of the 54,4 km long line are already built. The new Lötschberg base tunnel, which is 34,6 km long, will be constructed in stages. The tunnel will provisionally be only single-track over approximately 2/3 of the section. In collaboration with geologists, the actual line has been evaluated carefully so that there is nothing to prevent the rapid construction of the tunnel. The inauguration of the base tunnel will be in 2006/2007.
