Abstract

The distribution of natural rock temperatures at depth is of high importance in deep tunnel construction. Among others it is used to design the tunnel ventilation/climate system during construction and operation. Considering the great overburden (up to 2’500 m) elevated rock temperatures along the Gotthard Base Tunnel (GBT) must be expected. The rock temperature field within a mountain massif is the result of heat transport processes (heat conduction and advection) and is dependent on the boundary conditions involved (surface temperature, basal heat flow) as well as on certain parameters (3-D topography, distribution of geological units/of thermal conductivity, water circulation pattern/distribution of hydraulic conductivity). As a tool to conduct this prediction the numerical FE code FRACTure ( Kohl 1992 ) equipped with a special 3-D mesh generator, tailored to handle coupling (e.g. hydraulics/thermics) has been used. The complexity of the models has been increased gradually: pure conduction→advection due to deep water circulation, 2-D→3-D, homogeneous, isotropic→inhomogeneous, anisotropic, steady state→transient. The sensitivity of relevant 258 parameters has been found by sensitivity analysis, during which especially the thermal and hydraulic conductivity as well as their distribution proved to be the deciding factors. The prediction profile is based on a 75 × 15 × 50 km sized model including nearly 200’000 elements, coupled/transiently computed. Compared to the rock temperature distribution modelled for a pure conductive/steady state manner it becomes clear that the deep water circulation due to the high topography of the water table causes a redistribution of heat: generally there is a decrease of rock temperature observable under ridges and an increase under valleys. This is why the rock temperatures along the GBT, even in regions of highest overburden, should not exceed 45 °C. Around tunnelling kilometer 35 (from the north portal Erstfeld) the cooling effect due to the perpendicularly striking water circulation in the Piora zone manifests itself drastically (ΔT nearly 20°C).
