Abstract

For the project of the Gotthard base tunnel, the reliability of the geological basis is of crucial importance. Therefore an independent scrutiny of the geological forecast has been made (“Sicherheitsorientierte Prüfung”, SIOP) within the scope of the quality management of the tunnel-project. The purpose of this SIOP is to guarantee the completeness of possible risk scenarios relative to geology. The methodology for this will be explained hereafter, as well as some practical examples will be given. Furthermore some remarks on the strategic importance of the geological basis will be made and the influence of the geological parameters on the range of costs will be illustrated.
