Conceptual design process for deep level tunnels in South Africa
Abstract
Evaluation of the performance of the current design process for support systems in deep level South African tunnels indicated the lack of a rational design methodology, particularly under conditions of highly discontinuous rock mass structures and dynamic loading. A more comprehensive mechanistic approach to the design of these support systems was investigated by means of in situ, laboratory and numerical evaluation. The results of this evaluation have given greater insight into the interaction of the components of a support system in a highly discontinuous and dynamic rock mass environment. This understanding has been incorporated into a design process to enable an estimation of the performance of reinforcement and support system in this environment.
