Abstract

The study here presented refers to a large sliding movement in the rock mass of a quarry face located in a mountainous area near the town of Varese (Italy). A high quality quartziferous porphyrite is quarried. The quarry face is 180 m high, 220 m wide and is divided into 15 m high benches. Some instability phenomena has developed on the mountain slope at the back of the top of the quarry with the occurrence of tension cracks, spreading over a length of some tens of meters and with an aperture which reaches 120 cm. The study of the sliding phenomenon was carried out by means of investigations and monitoring over a two year period, in order to select and develop an effective stabilization method.
