Abstract

This work studies the presence and the distribution of alkali-silica reaction potentially bearing minerals in recent and actual alluvial deposits of the Lazio and Campania regions (Central-Western Italy). These two regions, with some hydrogeologically connected surrounding territories, cover a total surface of about 30,000km2; the alluvial deposits were investigated by collecting and analyzing almost 30 samples, mainly from actual alluvia and collected directly in river beds or — due to their prevailingly coarse granulometry — in the stock piles of crushed sand produced in active quarries. The quantitative evaluation of the potentially reactive minerals was made by means of psammographic analysis (sometimes integrated by means of semi- quantitative diffrattometric determinations), identifying (on the petrographic microscope) the grains of previously crushed (mainly to 2–0.04mm), HCI etched (to eliminate carbonates) and sieved (8 granulometric classes) samples. The main reactive minerals identified are flint (by far the most important), chalcedony and opal (microfossiles); the undulatory extinction quartz was not taken into account because of its weak and uncertain reactivity degree. The results obtained are synthetized in two schematic maps (originally 1:500,000 scale), one for each region; in these maps, which also show the main outcropping flint bearing formations, alluvial deposits are divided into 5 classes, according to their reactive mineral contents.
