Abstract

Alkali-aggregate reaction in concrete is related to an alteration process of siliceous rocks in the wet and very alkaline environment constituted by the hydrated cement paste. The alteration product is in the most cases an alkali-silica gel or an alkali-silica gel containing calcium. The imbibition pressure induced by water penetration in the gel can lead to the cracking of the concrete. The rocks affected by the reaction are those which contain, in given proportions, ill-crystallized and more or less scaterred silica. Alkali-reaction can lead to significant degradations of concrete buildings and its economic weight is of importance. Therefore it has been necessary to develop method of diagnosis and evaluation of the potentiel risks due to this reaction. The first stage is the evaluation of the aggegates by reliable tests allowing the prevision of the long term behaviour of a construction. Such a procedure is illustrated by the comparison between the present state of a building in service for ten years and the response of the rocks sampled in the quarry of origin to the rapid tests standardized in France.
