Abstract

The failure of soil slopes is generally closely connected with the development of a zone with highly localized strains. Upon using plasticity theory as the generic material model together with a kinematic assumption that involves discontinuous displacements, it is possible to derive a shear band (or cohesive zone) model that resembles the classical shear band concept, cf. Larsson et al. [ 1 ]. In practice, the resulting model is introduced along element boundaries (interfaces) of the finite element subdivision. A mesh realignment strategy is adopted to ensure the shear band to develop along critical directions. The algorithm is used for evaluating the development of a slip line beneath a footing resting on the crest of a slope.
