Abstract

A study is made of the accuracy of a range of integrating rules for triangles by comparing the numerical and exact integrals of a polynomial. Statistically valid results are obtained by repeating the comparison many times with randomly generated polynomial coefficients. Guidelines are presented which indicate the suitability of the different rules for different types of triangular finite element. These show, interestingly, that the accuracy of the integration does not necessarily increase with more integrating points. The findings relate principally to under-integrated elements.
