Abstract

This paper considers the likely effects of tunnelling operations on an existing masonry structure in London. Conventional calculations are available for the deformation of the ground due to tunnelling. However, these are based on empirical evidence and relate to the ‘green field’ situation in which the deformation of the ground is unaffected by overlying structures. The ground deformation is changed by the presence of a structure which generally distorts less than the ‘green field’ ground, but which may become damaged.
