Calculation of tunnels in soft ground
Abstract
This paper contains a presentation of a three dimensional finite element program intended for the calculation of tunnels in soft ground. The originality of this program consists in the method used for the storage of the stiffness matrix and the procedures selected for the resolution of both linear and non linear large systems. The performance of this program is illustrated through the calculation of a tunnel at shallow depth with an elastoplastic constitutive relation for the soil. The results of this calculation are used to check the possibility of application of the convergence - confinement method on shallow tunnels.
