Limit state calculation of an anchored retaining wall
Abstract
The stability of an anchored retaining wall is considered with two different numerical methods. The first chosen Kinematical Element Method showed two different failure modes: one cutting the anchor, the other including the anchor totally. The Finite Element calculation showed a third failure mode: the possibility of the pulling out of the anchor. For a comparison to the already computed stability calculation an artificial soil improvement had to be done, by a local implementation of a small cohesion to the elements around the anchor. But as the anchor force in the next calculation was not restricted, the displacements of the retaining wall increased the anchor forces and stabilized the system. Only with the same restriction to the anchor force chosen for the KEM-calculation, the FEM produced comparable results.
