Abstract

This paper follows on from previous papers ( Hicks & Mar, 1994a , 1994b ) which introduced an adaptive mesh capability for use with a double-hardening constitutive law for soils. The present work focuses in greater detail on the various numerical procedures adopted, including those of smoothing, error estimation and mesh generation. Particular reference is also made to the constitutive model. Its principal features are reviewed, as are numerical considerations relating to its effective implementation within an adaptive finite element mesh environment. A drained passive earth pressure analysis is used to illustrate algorithm performance.
