Abstract

The Controlled freezing tests with different cooling rates are conducted on saturated freezing clay in open system. Results show that the amount of frost heave and the amount of water intake flow are Propotional to the temperature at cold end of soil column and the elapsed time The rate of water intake flow and the rate of frost heave increase with increasing of cooling rate and have their maximum values. Before reaching to the maximum» the rate of water intake flow and the rate of frost heave are Propotional to the square root of cooling rate. The heave rate of in situ water decreases with increasing of cooling rate· With increasing of cooling rate the ice strips in Cryogenetic profiles are densified.
